JMC Learning Lab

The JMC Writing Center is located North Case, Room 341. The Writing Center is staffed by Madison students who are eager to support their peers with writing and reading strategies.

Faculty Director: Professor Melissa Fore

Writing Consultants: Emma Ayers, Belma Hodzic, Colin Reese, Logan Skinner, Meghan Valade, Thea Walerski

Mission:

The JMC Writing Consultants offer Madison students one-on-one peer assistance with a variety of writing tasks, from academic papers to personal statements and resumes. Consultants are junior and senior JMC students who understand the expectations of JMC professors and are able to help their peers at any stage of the writing process, including critical reading, brainstorming, organizing, writing, revising and editing. They are also available to help students individually on reading strategies for understanding and engaging with texts they will encounter in MC 111, MC 201, MC 202 and other courses.

Spring 2025 Semester Hours (Beginning Jan. 27):

Writing Consultants are available from 7-10 p.m., Monday and Thursday and 4-10 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. You do not need to make an appointment. Consultants work with students on a first-come, first-served basis.

Location:

The JMC Writing Center is located in Room 341 Case, on the third floor, towards the north side staircase.

Materials needed:

· Bring a copy of the writing assignment, so the consultant can understand what is being asked of you and help brainstorm ideas.

· It’s helpful to bring a copy of your essay (in messy draft form, close to being finished and anything in between) on a laptop so that you can make notes and changes as you dialogue with the consultant.

· Printing out two hard copies is also helpful so that both consultant and writer can make notes on the draft.

· If you are coming to talk through class reading, please bring a copy of the text(s)
