Announcement

It is with sadness that I announce that Professor Doug Hoekstra died on Sunday, May 21st, from complications following knee surgery

Professor Hoekstra was a central figure on the faculty of Madison College for more than three decades, inspiring generations of students with his teaching on American politics, the political system, the founding, and especially the presidency.  Indeed, he was the guiding light of the study of American politics and institutions at Madison from his arrival in 1969 to the present.

His courses focused on the important issues of the day and their interaction with our enduring institutions.  Professor Hoekstra not only challenged students to think about these issues and institutions seriously, but he also modeled a civilized way of talking about our highly contested differences of opinion and political preferences.  He leaves an enduring legacy in his many grateful students, colleagues, and friends.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ellen, his wife, and David and Elisabeth, his children.

Dean, James Madison College
