BIOGRAPHY

Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison; Political Science
Associate Professor

Professor Zierler’s research and teaching interests are in foreign policy, international security, international relations theory, international law, and international cooperation. His dissertation, “Failing to Commit: The Politics of Treaty Nonratification,” examined the numerous cases throughout U.S. history when the United States has signed a treaty only to never ratify it. With Professor Mohammed Ayoob, he published “The Unipolar Concert: North-South Divide Trumps Transatlantic Differences” in the World Policy Journal. With Michael Schechter, he has published “Multilateralism: Does it Still Matter?” in the Information Memorandum published by the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS). He also has co-authored an article in the Journal of European Integration titled “Barriers to Socialization: Turkey and Regional International Organizations.” He spent the spring 2014 semester and March 2015 and 2016 as a visiting professor at ADA University in Baku, Azerbaijan; he also regularly leads the International Relations in Brussels study abroad program.

Professor Zierler attended the International Studies Association annual conference in New Orleans in March, and presented a paper titled, “Foreign Policy Goals, Multilateralism, and the Role of International Governmental Organizations for Small States.” 

Professor Zierler taught a short course on Conflict Resolution for graduate students at ADA University’s School of Public and International Affairs in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Professor Zierler spent the spring 2014 semester as visiting professor at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy in Baku.

Professor Zierler presented his paper "Public Opinion, the Meaning of Security, and the Use of Force" at the Annual Convention of the International Studies Association, March 2008 in San Francisco. He also led the "International Relations in Brussels" study abroad program in July, taking 25 Madison students.

Professors Matthew Zierler and Mohammed Ayoob published "The Unipolar Concert: North-South Divide Trumps Translatlantic Differences?" in World Policy Journal (Spring 2005).

Professor Zierler has accepted an offer to join the faculty in a tenure stream position next August in International Relations.  Matt has made a strong impression already as a gifted teacher and great colleague. 

Professors Schechter and Zierler published "Multilateralism: Does its Still Matter" in the Fall 2005 Information Memorandum published by The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS).
