James Madison College is committed to expanding understanding of other countries and cultures by encouraging students to plan an education abroad experience. Education abroad contributes to academic advancement, personal growth, and professional development while providing exposure to intellectual traditions and perspectives that complement JMC coursework. Approved programs can also satisfy JMC’s field experience requirement.

Why Study Abroad at JMC?

Education abroad offers Madison students the opportunity to:

Program Types

  • Faculty-Directed
    • Students participate in a program directed by MSU faculty, alongside other MSU students.
    • Predominantly offered in the summer.
    • JMC courses available.

  • Semester Programs
    • Exchanges: MSU students enroll as a visiting student at an international institution while paying MSU tuition, transferring credit back to MSU.
    • Direct Enrollment: MSU students enroll as a visiting student at an international university and pay tuition and fees directly to the host institution, transferring credit back to MSU.
    • Full Semester Courses: Variety of courses available.

  • International Internship Programs
    • Internships ranging from six to 10 weeks.
    • Students enroll in MSU Field Experience credits (MC400/401) for full-time internship-only programs.
    • Hybrid programs (part-time internship + one academic course) satisfy JMC Field Experience requirement
    • Several locations and wide variety of internship placements available.

    Field Experience Requirement

    Certain education abroad programs can fulfill Madison’s Field Experience requirement, provided that:

    • Program is eight credits or more
    • Students are at junior standing or above
    • Courses completed cannot be used for JMC major

    Students interested in using education abroad for Field Experience credit should work closely with Field Experience Coordinator Lauren Michalak to ensure program requirements are met.

    Financial Support

    Scholarships and financial aid are available to help make education abroad accessible to all Madison students. Various funding opportunities exist specifically for international experiences, making global education more affordable.

    Contact Field Experience Coordinator Lauren Michalak (or schedule an appointment via SIS) to discuss education abroad options and begin planning your international experience. Students can meet with Lauren for drop-in advising on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in 329 South Case Hall.
