James Madison College offers a distinctive educational experience that goes beyond traditional undergraduate programs. As one of Michigan State University's premier residential colleges, JMC combines the intimate atmosphere of a small liberal arts college with the vast resources of a Big Ten research university. Our interdisciplinary approach to public affairs education prepares students to tackle complex global challenges through critical thinking, analytical reasoning and effective communication.

One of the things that sets JMC apart is our commitment to experiential learning. Students engage with politics and policy directly through internships in Lansing, Washington D.C., and around the world. Our study abroad programs take Madisonians around the world, providing firsthand exposure to international relations, comparative governance, and diverse cultural perspectives. With small class sizes averaging 20-25 students, you'll work closely with distinguished faculty who are both accomplished scholars and dedicated mentors invested in your success.

JMC graduates consistently achieve outstanding outcomes, with one of the highest placement rates on campus for graduate school admission and career placement. Our alumni network includes state legislators, federal officials, nonprofit leaders, attorneys, educators and business executives who remain actively engaged with the college and eager to support current students.

Comparative Cultures and Politics explores how cultural, historical, and political forces shape societies around the world. Students examine democratization, economic development, social movements, and human rights through comparative analysis of different regions and political systems.
International Relations focuses on the complex interactions between nations, international organizations, and global actors. Students analyze foreign policy, international security, global economics, and transnational issues like climate change and migration.
Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy examines fundamental questions about justice, liberty, rights, and the role of government. Students engage with classic and contemporary political philosophy while analyzing constitutional systems and democratic institutions.
Public Affairs for Secondary Education prepares future social studies educators through a public and international affairs lens. It combines JMC's interdisciplinary approach to public affairs with the coursework and field experiences required for secondary teacher certification in Michigan.
Social Relations and Policy investigates how public policies address social challenges including inequality, health care, education, criminal justice and environmental sustainability. Students learn policy analysis, program evaluation and advocacy strategies.
