Why Choose JMC?

James Madison College is one of Michigan State University's residential colleges, combining the close-knit environment of a small liberal arts college with the resources of a Big Ten research university. Students choose from five interdisciplinary public affairs majors — spanning political science, international relations, public policy, and social studies education — and study in small classes of 20–25 students. Every student completes a field experience requirement that includes internships in Lansing, Washington, D.C., and abroad. Key Admissions Details

James Madison College admits students through Michigan State University's undergraduate application. There is no separate application for JMC. When you apply to MSU, you'll select James Madison College (or one of its five majors) as your intended major.

MSU's Early Action deadline is Nov. 1, which guarantees an admissions decision by Jan. 15 and maximum consideration for scholarships. Regular Decision applications submitted by Feb. 1 are guaranteed an initial decision by March 31. Applications received between Feb. 1 and April 1 are reviewed on a rolling basis. MSU maintains a test-optional admissions policy.

Our Majors

International Relations Focuses on the interactions between nations, international organizations, and global actors. Students analyze foreign policy, international security, and transnational issues including climate change, migration, and global economics.

Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy Explores fundamental questions about justice, liberty, rights, and the role of government. Students engage with classic and contemporary political philosophy while analyzing constitutional systems and democratic institutions.

Politics, Rights, & Culture Examines how cultural, historical, and political forces shape societies around the world. Students study democratization, social movements, human rights, and economic development through comparative analysis across regions.

Public Affairs for Secondary Education Prepares future social studies teachers through a public and international affairs lens. Combines JMC's interdisciplinary approach with the coursework and field experience required for Michigan secondary teacher certification.

Social Relations and Policy Investigates how public policies address challenges in areas like health care, education, criminal justice, and inequality. Students develop skills in policy analysis, program evaluation, and advocacy.
