Prior to coming to Madison, you worked at MSU in Admissions; how do you plan on using your experience there with the work you will be doing here?

I plan to use the networks and relationships obtained from working with students, the community, stakeholders and campus partners in my recruitment role with the Office of Admissions. The most important skill I have learned is to listen and always be intentional in decision-making that has an impact on students.

How did you choose a career in higher education, and what are you most excited about now that you are in a DEI role in a college?

My master’s degree is in higher education from MSU. I like working for a Big Ten institution and enjoy learning, but most importantly being immersed in an environment of scholars that have an impact on the communities that surround us.

What I am most excited about in my new DEI role at James Madison College is being able to work directly with students and help guide them through the college process and on to graduation.

What advice would you give to JMC students from minoritized backgrounds who may be struggling to find community?

Explore. Explore. Get out of your comfort zone. Try something new that is unfamiliar. Do not be afraid to network, get involved on campus and ask questions. Also, know that you are not alone in your college journey; there are many resources and people here at MSU who want to help and see you succeed.

Who has inspired you the most in your life?

My mother has inspired me the most in my life. She has taught me never to give up on my dreams and always “put in the work.” She has instilled certain cultural values in me that have helped me become the person I am today, both on a personal and professional level.

What would people be surprised to learn about you and your interests outside of work?

I really enjoy being around people and giving back to my community through volunteerism, other social activities and advocacy. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, spending time with family, and camping with friends in the summer.
