Dr. Herbert Garfinkel was the founding Dean of James Madison College. His vision, leadership, administrative skills and commitment to excellence were critical during the formative years of the College. Citizenship and social justice were primary subjects of study during Dr. Garfinkel's academic career. They also reflected a personal commitment to his everyday life and relationships with friends, colleagues and the larger society.

The purpose of this endowment is to promote, study and advance scholarship around citizenship and democratic values at JMC and the broader university community.
