Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration for Posterity

Attend James Madison College's annual Constitution Day Lecture on Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. in Room 338, Case Hall or watch the lecture online via YouTube on Sept. 17 (video will be available on Sept. 17).

This year's speaker is Dr. Jeremy Bailey, Professor of Humanities at the Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida.

Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration for Posterity

The Declaration of Independence contains perhaps the most important words in the English language, but it was only late in life that Jefferson turned his efforts to explaining those words. This talk considers Jefferson's view of the Declaration by revisiting his retirement writings approaching the 250th anniversary of 1776 and tells the stories of the famous letters to Henry Lee and Roger Weightman.
