Prof. Jennifer Pruitt (University of Wisconsin) introduces the foundations of Islamic architecture through two of its most iconic monuments, the Dome of the Rock and the Great Mosque of Damascus. This lecture explores how these early structures blend religious meaning, political ambition, and artistic innovation to shape a new architectural tradition. By examining their design and historical context, the talk reveals how sacred space became a powerful expression of identity in the early Islamic world.
