The MSU Muslim Studies Program presents "Leaving Legacies: A History of Individualism Outside the West," a book talk by Dr. Shayan Rajani, assistant professor of history at Michigan State University.

Is individualism a distinctly western phenomenon? Is rebellion and rejection of tradition the only true way to be an individual? Join us for a talk on the history of individualism in pre-modern South Asia. Find out how monuments and books supplemented and, in some cases, supplanted the expectation that children should carry on the good name of their parents. Learn about unexplored aspects of South Asian history, particularly from a global, regional and gendered perspective.

Organized by the MSU Muslim Studies Program in coordination with the Department of History and Asian Studies Center and cosponsored by Global Studies in the Arts & Humanities and James Madison College.
