In the fall of 2024, James Madison College invited all current faculty, academic staff, support staff and students to assess the climate and culture within the college.
The survey was designed to provide a holistic snapshot of the college's racial climate. It collected information about perceptions of the demographic makeup of JMC, classroom experiences, curriculum, administrative efforts and other issues. The initiative is part of JMC's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan.
The college's last climate survey was conducted in 2016. The data collection instrument used in 2024 was based on the 2016 instrument to measure similar concepts. The survey instrument was created with input from JMC’s College Inclusion Committee; JMC’s Office of Justice, Equity and Inclusion; and MSU’s Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.
MSU's Office for Survey Research conducted the survey on behalf of JMC and delivered its results in the four reports linked below. Participation was voluntary and anonymous.
Survey results were discussed at the April 11, 2025, College Assembled meeting and the State of the College Community Breakfast on April 16, 2025, which was open to all faculty, staff and students.
