James Madison College set a record on Give Green Day, raising $36,642 for the college. Our featured project, the JMC Emergency Scholarship Fund, which provides much-needed support to students with financial hardships, garnered the most support at $34,074. Alumna Marti Newman (IR ’82) and her spouse Christopher Pagano helped amplify the campaign with a generous matching gift challenge of $10,000, which was met by college donors by mid-afternoon on Give Green Day. Thanks to our alumni and friends, this project led all MSU projects across campus.
“This generosity is a testament to our Madison Community. We know the disproportionate effects of the pandemic on our students. The JMC Emergency Scholarship Fund keeps students in school, which has been critical during the pandemic. Thank you to all the donors who are making our community stronger with their financial and moral support.” – Interim Dean Linda Racioppi
The total dollars raised are impressive, but the impact these dollars have for our students is the most important story. During the first year of the pandemic, the college has awarded over $54,000 in emergency scholarships; from as little as a few hundred dollars to two thousand dollars, each award was critical to keeping a student in school. The college coordinates each award with the MSU Office of Financial Aid.
“Each student’s need is unique, but they have a common thread of a sudden change that interrupts a students or family’s ability to meet educational expenses: it can be health related, loss of employment, income disruption, or unexpected expense, which creates a financial emergency. These scholarships help students meet expenses until their financial aid situation is re-evaluated next year. It is hard to hear the stories, but thanks to our generous donors we have the resources to make a difference for our students.” – Assistant Dean Jeff Judge
