Professor Lisa Barksdale-Shaw Leaving JMC

January 21, 2021

It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Professor Lisa Barksdale-Shaw has accepted a tenure-system position in the English Department at Arizona State University beginning August 2021. Professor Barksdale-Shaw has been a valued member of the James Madison College faculty since 2018 and an impactful part of the first-year program, teaching regularly in MC 111, MC 201, and MC 202. She has also enjoyed working with Honors College students, including mentoring students in the Professorial Assistantship Program and teaching honors courses MC 490H and MC 495H. Professor Barksdale-Shaw has brought to the college her unique scholarship and research blending theatre, law, medicine, and history. Her interdisciplinary approach has encouraged her students to advance new questions and representations of justice and injustice. She has supported students in and out of the classroom as a faculty advisor and mentor in the Madison Academic Diversity Initiative, committee member with the Creating Inclusive Excellence Grants (CIEG) Residential Colleges Collaboration, and judge in the Great Lakes Moot Court Regional Competition. Of her time at JMC, Professor Barksdale-Shaw said, “I look forward to witnessing the work by this new generation of change agents at James Madison College--I am truly excited about those possibilities.”

While she will be greatly missed by fellow faculty, staff, and students, we congratulate Professor Barksdale-Shaw and wish her well on this new chapter of her academic career!
