Science can't tell us what science is for?" A platitude, to be sure.  But, today, amidst so much public chatter about the loss of public trust in the legitimacy and integrity of science as such, can we really rest satisfied trading on whatever is left of inherited consensus that the effort to inquire into nature is a reasonable and even admirable activity? Moreover, how science is publicly justified affects the conduct of the activity. 

So, for more than one reason, we men and women of science may want to remind ourselves of the two great founding moments of science in the West, and of Francis Bacon’s grand effort to put science on a new foundation in particular.
