2023 NSO

New Student Orientation

Summer New Student Orientation will welcome and prepare students starting at MSU in the fall semester. NSO will occur in stages, with both synchronous and asynchronous activities.

NSO will begin as students gain access to content in MSU's D2L platform. Once a student has completed that content, they will be granted access to schedule an academic advising session (to be conducted via Zoom) with a JMC advisor. Please monitor your MSU email for instructions on making this appointment using the online scheduling system. Students will get one appointment in June or July to discuss their academic priorities and goals with the JMC advisor as they work together to plan the student's first year fall semester schedules (you will enroll for spring semester starting in early November).

Prior to their advising appointment, students will need to complete the following:

  1. Take the MSU Math Placement Assessment
  2. If you plan to continue with a language you have already studied, you'll need a language placement.
  3. Complete the JMC Homework Form: Available as WORD DOC or PDF
  4. Review following information:
    1. Academic Requirements Overview (link to media space)
    2. Student Resources & Opportunities (PDF)
    3. Career Conversation – Coming Soon!
Note: Transfer students will meet individually with a JMC advisor to help them prepare for their formal advising appointment. If you have not already been contacted, please email Lindsay at thornh12@msu.edu to arrange for this quick meeting. Completing the homework form prior to advising will not be necessary for transfer students and the course recommendations might vary slightly from what is discussed in the academic requirements overview linked above.

If you have completed the D2L modules for NSO and do not receive an email with instructions for scheduling your advising appointment within 1 week, please contact Lindsay Snyder at thornh12@msu.edu

Students are encouraged to visit MSU's NSO website for additional details about the program, as laid out by the university's central orientation office.
