Are all students required to live on campus?
All freshmen are required to live on campus. Only those students who live with a parent or legal guardian within a 50 mile radius of the institution have the option to reside at home.
Are freshmen able to drive to class?
Freshmen may not have vehicles on campus. However, getting to class is usually not a problem. Students are encouraged to walk, bike or make use of the campus bus system to get to classes. Some courses are even offered in the residence halls.
When will roommates and residence halls be assigned?
Students will learn of their residence hall assignment prior to the Summer Academic Orientation Program (AOP). Roommates names and other information becomes available in early August, a few weeks prior to the start of the Fall semester.
What types of academic support services are available at MSU and how much help can I expect from my professor?
All faculty members who are teaching are expected to hold office hours for interaction with students. Many large classes will also have teaching assistants that you can contact for help. As an institution, MSU offers students a tremendous number of academic services. From the Writing, Math Learning and Learning Resources Centers to the Office of Supportive Services and the Undergraduate University Division, MSU is committed to providing students with an enhanced learning experience.
Are freshmen allowed to work on campus during their first semester?
Freshmen are encouraged to work part-time during their first semester. On-campus jobs are plentiful and enable students to earn cash and budget their time more wisely. This last factor often leads to better grades.
What's the average class size and how many of my classes will be taught by actual faculty?
The number of students in an average undergraduate classroom at MSU ranges between 34 to 45 students. 87 percent of courses at MSU are taught by ranked faculty.
