Ramazan Kilinc is a Post-doctoral Scholar and Visiting Assistant Professor at James Madison College. He is also an affiliated faculty in the Muslim Studies Program. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Arizona State University in 2008. He also holds an M.A. (2001) and B.A. (1999) degrees in international relations from Bilkent University, Turkey.

The research questions that interest Prof. Kilinc emerge at the intersection of comparative politics and international relations with a special focus on the role of religion in politics. His dissertation examined how and when international norms exert change in institutions of state-religion relations in France and Turkey. Prof. Kilinc is currently working on his book manuscript, entitled History, Norms and State Policies toward Religious Minorities: France and Turkey. He has also published articles on Islamic social movements, Muslims in France and Europe, religion and democratization, and Turkish domestic and foreign policies.

Prof. Kilinc’s teaching interests include Comparative Politics, International Relations, Religion and Politics, and Middle Eastern Politics. The courses he has taught at Madison include "International Relations I:  World Politics and International Security," "Regional Politics, Cooperation and Conflict in the Middle East," and "Comparative Analysis of Foreign Policy."

Ramazan Kilinc published an article entitled "International Norms, Domestic Political Survival and Foreign Policy: Turkey and the UN Alliance of Civilizations" forthcoming in Insight Turkey, 11:3, July-September 2009.

Prof. Kilinc published a book chapter entitled "State and Muslims in France: Secularism, Islamophobia, and the Headscarf Ban," in Turkish in the volume edited by Aysegul Komsuoglu and Gul Kurtoglu Eskisar (ed.), The Different Faces of Political Islam (Istanbul: Profil Yayincilik, 2009).  

Dr. Kilinc presented a paper entitled, "State and Muslims in France: Secularism, Islamophobia, and the Headscarf Ban," at the Fifth Biennial Symposium on Religion and Politics at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI on April 24, 2009.

Dr. Kilinc presented a paper entitled "Islam, Secularism, and Democratization in Turkey: The Relevance of Consensus Building," at the Midwest Political Science Association Meeting in Chicago, IL on April 4, 2009.

Prof. Kilinc presented a paper entitled "Bargaining Identities: Explaining Turkish Foreign Policy Discourse of the ‘Alliance of Civilizations’," at the Alliance of Civilizations: Turkey at the Crossroads of Cultures Conference at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, GA, on January 30, 2009.

Prof. Kilinc acted as panel discussant at the Annual Meeting of International Studies Association in February 2009 and at the Annual Meeting of Midwest Political Science Association in April 2009.

In the Spring 2009, Dr. Kilinc published two OpEd pieces on the Obama administration’s Middle East policy (February 17, 2009) and the Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations held in April 2009 in Istanbul (April 7, 2009) in Zaman daily, a prominent national newspaper in Turkey.

Dr. Kilinc is currently completing his book manuscript, entitled History, Norms and State Policies toward Religious Minorities: France and Turkey.
