Professor Stein-Roggenbuck’s research focuses on the history of welfare policy, the rise of professions and the rhetoric of professionalization. Her book, Negotiating Relief: The Development of Social Welfare Programs in Depression-Era Michigan, 1930-1940, was published in 2008 (Ohio State University Press). She has published articles in Michigan Historical Review and Social Service Review. Her current research projects focus on medical care for the poor before Medicaid, and the role of family responsibility in welfare policy. She was a fellow in the Walter and Pauline Adams Academy for Instructional Excellence and Innovation in 2008-2009.

Susan Stein-Roggenbuck's book "Negotiating Relief: The Development of Social Welfare Programs in Depression-Era Michigan, 1930-1940" was published in August 2008 by The Ohio State University Press.

Susan Stein-Roggenbuck is among the first group of fifteen fellows in a new MSU initiative, the Walter and Pauline Adams Academy for Instructional Excellence and Innovation. The initiative provides a cross-disciplinary cohort of instructors with opportunities to further their development as excellent teachers whose instructional decisions are rooted in the robust research literature on effective teaching and learning.
