Hungary, Romania and the Czech Republic (Summer)
About the program
This program is designed for undergraduate students with an interest in political science, international relations, international business, political economy, political theory, and social relations. It offers formal coursework and lectures at universities and institutes in Hungary, Romania, and the Czech Republic. Key themes will be the political and economic aspects of post-communist transition and the challenge of designing policies to address the region's social and environmental problems. Lecturers will be drawn from the Budapest University of Economic Sciences (formerly Karl Marx University) and the Palackı University in Olomouç. It is expected that the program will also include a stay at Babes Boyai University in Cluj, Romania for lectures and discussion on the "case" of transition in Romania.The program is designed as a companion program for the "International Relations in Belgium" program, so students may choose to continue their study abroad experience an additional month for a complete introduction to the "New Europe."
Classes Available
Three James Madison College (MC) courses will be offered which meet requirements for MC majors in International Relations. These courses will also serve as valuable electives for Political Theory, Political Economy, and Social Relations and Policy majors.Students will be required to enroll in a minimum of six (6), maximum of twelve (12), semester credits from the following courses:
- MC 390 - Comparative Transitions to Parliamentary Democracy and a Market Economy
- MC 325 - State and Society in Comparative Perspective
- MC 299 - Independent Study
- MC 399 - Advanced Independent Study
